For many NLE’s, real time collaboration – that is, multiple editors using the same project at the same time, and seeing others changes easily – has been the gold standard for professional editorial systems. Normally, the lengths editors need to go to share cuts and adapt to those editorial changes took specialized, and sometimes very involved workflows, or staying within an Avid editorial ecosystem. 4 years ago, Adobe broke into this collaboration paradigm with Adobe Anywhere, followed by Adobe Team Projects, and now in late 2017 -shared projects.

It’s no secret that this feature is heavily targeted to multi user film and TV projects that are reliant on this kind of interactivity. While any workgroup can benefit from the workflow, it’s a necessity for the larger budget, mass media programs. However, it’s important to realize the Adobe has simply introduced the framework for this; that is, the outer shell of Premiere Pro allows for shared projects, but the hardware layer must be present. This is where SANs (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network Attached Storage) come into play. SAN and NASes both allow for multiple users to access the same storage pool at the same time, as well as administer what users have access to what storage pools. For Adobe shared projects to work, the editor needs access to that storage pool AND project and media contained therein. A second editor (or more) can also logon to that storage pool and access the same media and projects. With this methodology, you now have the beginnings of a true collaborative workflow within your facility.

A very popular choice in the media and entertainment space is Quantum StorNext storage. What makes Xcellis Foundation a killer starter system is that it can grow into a full-blown StorNext SAN, without needing a forklift overhaul like other NAS or SAN systems.
